How to Tie Dye using Natural Spices

Tie dyed fabrics have made a serious comeback and it’s so fun and easy to do on your own. I have fond memories of dying fabrics with my mum growing up and decided to give it a try this time using natural dyes found in our kitchen. Thanks to all the crafty people on Pinterest you can find lists of berries, spices and veggies to create pretty much any desired colour. We tried Tumeric spice this time because it is rumoured to withstand washing the best. The results were amazing.   To start, gather your old white clothes that could use some tie dye love. Twist and fold them up using rubber bands to hold your designs in place. We wrapped bands around the clothes every couple inches all the way down the garment which creates simple stripes – but just wing it! Next soak them in cold salted water because this will help the dye to set properly.   While they are in their bath, you can prepare your dye. Boil a large pot of water and add  about 4 spoonfuls of turmeric spice to it. Let it simmer for a half hour and then you can remove it from the heat. Add the clothes and then just let them sit in there for an hour or so until they are the colour you want. I took my t-shirt out before the kids clothes because I was trying for a more muted look which you can see in the pictures. When you are happy with the intensity of the colour, take them out, remove the rubber bands and give them a good rinse in cold water. Hang them up to let them dry and admire your work!
